Benefits of a Complete Mouth Makeover

Anyone who is missing a majority of their natural teeth can benefit from a complete mouth makeover. Missing teeth or living with badly damaged teeth does a lot more than ruin a person’s smile. It also increases the person’s risk of developing a variety of dental issues.

Reason to consider a complete mouth makeover

Brushing twice a day and flossing daily is an essential part of good dental health. When some of a person’s teeth are missing, it becomes harder to remove food particles and other debris from the teeth and gums. Teeth that are cracked, chipped or poorly angled can make it harder to remove food particles and plaque properly while cleaning. When the patient is missing most of their real teeth, the large gaps between teeth become harder to clean. This leads to the bacteria that live inside the person’s mouth having more carbohydrates to ferment into acids. Having bacteria breed unchecked on the gums eventually leads to gum disease or infection. Both of these dental issues can lead to the eventual loss of teeth.

In addition, the roots of real teeth serve a very important function. These stimulate the jawbone whenever a person drinks, eats or speaks. This promotes tissue regeneration of jaw bone tissue, strengthening the jaw.

When a person is missing natural teeth, the jawbone stops being stimulated. This leads to the deterioration of the jawbone and the loss of essential bone tissue. The result often changes a person’s facial structure, making it appear more wrinkled and older.

Potential types of mouth makeover

A complete mouth makeover helps to restore a person’s smile and restore the natural function of teeth. It also helps to prevent problems that are associated with missing teeth like jaw bone degeneration and alignment issues.

There are three popular options when it comes to full mouth reconstruction treatments. These are implants, dentures and implant supported dentures.

1. Implants

Implants are typically titanium rods or screws that are surgically inserted into a patient’s jawbone. The implant is then given time to fuse with the surrounding bone tissue holding it in place. This is known as osseointegration.

Once the implant is fully fused, a crown is placed on top of it. Implants are the preferred way to replace missing teeth since it serves as an artificial tooth root and keeps the jawbone properly stimulated.

2. Dentures

These are the most affordable way to replace missing teeth. It consists of two parts: a base that keeps the prosthetic in place and a set of artificial teeth. One major disadvantage of dentures is the fact it does not prevent jawbone tissue loss.

3. Implant-supported dentures

Implant-supported dentures are a hybrid of implants and dentures. It offers a cheaper solution to implants, yet it ensures the patient’s jawbone tissue remains properly stimulated. It is also a more effective solution than traditional dentures.
