The Relationship Between Veneers and Dental Enamel

The relationship between veneers and dental enamel is an interesting one. Veneers are thin, shell-like devices that are used to change the appearance of teeth. These devices are used to fix a wide range of oral issues like stains, discoloration, alignment issues, gaps between teeth and disfigured teeth.

Veneers are a popular option with people who want to instantly change the appearance of their smiles given how effective these devices are at making teeth appear flawless. In addition, veneers are typically made out of materials like ceramics and porcelain and these materials have stain-resistant properties. That means it is a lot easier to keep stains and discoloration off veneers than natural teeth.

What to expect when getting veneers and dental enamel

The first thing the dentists will do is take an impression of the patient’s teeth. These measurements are sent to a lab where customized veneers are made for the patient. The relationship between veneers and dental enamel often depends on the type of veneers the patient decides to get.

Traditional veneers require the removal of a small portion of tooth enamel. By removing this portion of the teeth, space is made for the veneers to fit in naturally. This prevents it from making the wearer’s teeth appear larger than normal.

There is also a second type of veneers that are often called no-prep veneers. These prosthetics are thinner than traditional veneers, and they do not make teeth appear bulky when placed on tooth enamel. That makes a huge difference.

When a person gets a traditional veneer, the tooth that has been repaired will no longer have enamel to protect it for the rest of the patient’s life. Since the inner layers of the tooth will be vulnerable to the acids and bacteria in the mouth without any enamel to protect them, the tooth will always need to be protected with a prosthetic like a veneer or crown.

With no-prep veneers, patients are not required to use a different prosthetic if the veneers are taken off the tooth. There is also less tooth sensitivity experienced when no-prep veneers are used.

Benefits of getting veneers

There are many benefits associated with getting these dental prosthetics. Some of these include:

  • It is an effective way to improve the appearance of a person’s teeth drastically
  • It looks and feels natural
  • Veneers can last up to 15 years with good oral hygiene
  • A quick procedure that can be completed during a single visit to the dentist if CEREC is available
  • Easier to keep stains off veneers than natural teeth. Veneers are made from materials like ceramics and porcelain that are not for their stain resistant properties.
  • It is one of the quickest ways to makeover a smile
