Orthodontics and The Different Treatments to Fix Your Teeth

When someone hears the word ‘orthodontics,’ they likely think of traditional metal braces. For many years, these were the standard device to straighten teeth, and most people do not like their unattractive appearance. Currently, the specialty of orthodontics includes more than braces and refers to the area of dentistry that focuses on correcting any misaligned teeth and jaws.

Different orthodontic treatments

Orthodontics uses many different technologies and treatments to reduce oral problems. The unique needs of each set of teeth will determine what treatment orthodontists use to assist in adjusting and fixing the patient’s mouth. A few of the most used technologies include:

Traditional braces

Metal braces are the most common treatment for orthodontic issues. Using wires and brackets, braces bind to the mouth to help in fixing crooked and gapped teeth, along with other problems such as overbites, underbites and crowding. The brackets mold to the teeth, and “archwires” connect through the brackets to tighten and fix any issues.

Although this is a popular treatment, some people are eligible for other treatments which are not as noticeable and can work faster. One of the most popular alternatives is Invisalign.

Invisalign

Invisalign is one of the most popular new technologies that have taken the dentistry world by storm. Having the flexibility of being able to remove the Invisalign aligner, along with no wires or metal on the teeth, makes it easier to live your typical day-to-day life. This simplicity makes it one of the most popular choices. The Invisalign treatment also takes much less time to achieve the same results as traditional braces.

Fixed space maintainers

Orthodontists use fixed space maintainers to help if a baby tooth falls out prematurely. Baby teeth are vital in ensuring when permanent teeth grow. Having a lost tooth could be detrimental when the permanent adult teeth being growing into place.

Who needs orthodontic treatment

A person will not know if they need orthodontic treatment unless they work with their dentist to know if their issues are correctable. There are many different problems that orthodontists can help resolve. Here are a few:

  • Overbite: People often refer to this as “buck teeth.” The name refers to when the upper front teeth sit too far forward, causing them to stick out over the lower set of teeth.
  • Underbite: This can give people a “bulldog” appearance where the teeth on the lower jaw are in front of the upper row of teeth.
  • Crowding: Crowding occurs when too many teeth grow on the “dental ridge.” This issues causes the teeth to smash together, producing discomfort and pain.

These are only a few of the reasons that someone would need orthodontic treatment. Some other medical issues include crossbites, open bites, spacing and misplaced midlines. Working with your dentist is the only way to know which orthodontic treatment is best for resolving your specific teeth issues.
